Even though the Center for Visually Impaired is positioned as a leading resource for those who are blind, suffering from diminished sight, and color blindness, the Center's previous website did not meet ADA, Section 508, or W3C compliance for accessibility.
Almost every accepted convention of good website design had to be challenged – from page architecture, UI design, color and the code itself. The site needed to be designed to provide a compelling experience via the use of a machine reader and braille printer ahead of someone with full vision.
The most challenging part of the project was to "see" the site as it would be experienced by those with visual impairments. We also needed to create a content management system that could be easily used by those with no – or low vision. We also needed to re-think how to conduct our "design thinking" workshops since the tools we regularly use are designed for those with full vision.
After the site was launched, creative director, Bob Kadrie received a postcard from a patron of the center. It read simply, "Thank you, Bob. This is the most beautiful website I've never seen."
