Reimagining one of the cornerstones of business software is no trivial task. Yet, after HCL entered into an agreement with IBM to market, and renew development of the groundbreaking Lotus Notes, that’s exactly what my team and I were asked to do – and in record time.
“Places,” the working name for a product developed by HCL and Red Pill Now, was initially conceived as a modern alternative to the aging Lotus Notes client featuring the “ultimate container store.” Places allows workers to send emails, texts and calls, create and approve calendar events, track and manage tasks, manage documents, photos and links, all while collaborating with others in real time. Finally, programmers, and non-programmers alike can add addition functionaliy, using data from virtually any source, using low and no-code tools – all without leaving their current workspace.
During the discovery phase of the project, we conducted design thinking workshops at Lotus User Groups and conferences throughout Europe and the U.S. Places is designed to be a highly disruptive product, showcasing never before seen concepts in workplace collaboration software – bringing a significant amount of thought-leadership to the marketplace – in much the same way Lotus Notes did back in 1989.
