Reimagining one of the cornerstones of business software is no trivial task. After HCL entered into an agreement with IBM to market and renew the development of their enterprise collaboration suite, I led a small team of designers and engineers to develop a coded demo of new UX, UI, and collaboration functionality for a large audience in Rotterdam. After delivering the demo on time and budget, my team was retained for additional UX research, ideation, and demo development.
“Places,” the working name of HCL's next-generation collaboration product, was initially conceived as the “ultimate container store.” The product allows workers to send emails, texts, and video calls, create and approve calendar events, track and manage tasks, manage documents, photos and links – all while collaborating with others in real-time from remote locations without the use of cloud tech. Finally, programmers and non-programmers can add additional functionality by dragging and dropping commonly-used enterprise apps and data documents from virtually any source – using low and no-code tools – without ever leaving their current workspace.
During the discovery phase, we conducted design thinking workshops throughout Europe and the U.S. Places is designed to be a highly disruptive product, showcasing never before seen concepts in workplace collaboration software – bringing a significant amount of thought-leadership to the marketplace.
